Today is Orphan Sunday…an event to bring awareness to the millions of children worldwide without a family or place to call home. I can’t help but think about our own little one today. I often think about her mama and what an immense decisions she is about to make. I wonder if she is safe, healthy, or frightened. I pray for them both daily.
It is a constant struggle for me, but it started with the notion that if I love God, and I love people, shouldn’t my life reflect that? The passion I feel for orphans now has grown in ways I never expected. I don’t know where, or how, or when, but I have to do something to bring awareness to the needs of these kids. I have to serve in someway. These kids are overseas, but also right in your own town. There is a HUGE need for loving people to step up and care for them through adoption, through fostering, orphan sponsorship, or by supporting a family that is or has adopted.
How many of us need to be challenged to step outside of the bubble we live in?
James 1:22-27 (New International Version)
22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.
26 Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless. 27 Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.
